Rei – Spirit and Ki – Universal Life Energy. This simple translation of the word means that Reiki is more than a physical therapy – it is a healing system that heals on all levels, the Body, Mind and Spirit at one and the same time.
Universal Life Energy is the life-force of the universe. It is the never-ending source of support and strength which flows through all living things and is vital to sustain us and enable us to survive and live within our human – 3-dimensional – existence on the earth. It is known as ki in Japan, chi in China and prana in India and the practice of Acupuncture, Tai Chi and Yoga are all based on the free-flow of this energy within and around us all.
But this life-force is more than just a cosmic energy. Expressed through the System of Reiki, by those who have been ‘attuned’ to use it, it is activated by the power of intent. It then becomes dynamic and is – ‘The Manifestation of the Healing Power of Love.’
But this Love goes beyond the conditional love of an exchange of our individual need and support, each for the other, which operates on our human level of understanding and sharing. The manifestation of Love through Reiki is the expression of Universal, Unconditional and Compassionate Love. It operates ‘from the highest good and for the highest good’ for both those that receive it – and those that give it. (Which is not always exactly what we believe to be our highest good at the time – see ‘What to expect!’)
What is it used for?
1. Inducing Deep Relaxation and Releasing Stress and Tension.
2. Stimulating the natural healing of Acute and Chronic Ailments. It can – and sometimes does – relieve ALL physical pain to a greater or lesser extent.
3. Speeding Recovery after Surgery and Injury.
4. Supporting Conventional Medicine & Minimising the Side-Effects of Drugs.
5. Releasing Blocked Energies and Cleansing Toxins.
6. Supporting during the Times of Crises, Depression, Illness, Death & Bereavement.
7. Restoring Self-Worth and the ability to take Responsibility for the Self.
8. Supporting and Replenishing All Carers.
9. Promoting Harmony within Relationships.
10. Gaining Greater Perception of Inner Clarity, Understanding, Wisdom, Awareness and Enlightenment.
How does it work?
Reiki Energy is able to go to the deeper levels of our being where so much illness has its origin. Dis-ease is always a ‘chicken and egg’ situation. Is it the mind that creates the physical sickness and pain – or the body that affects the mind, resulting in depression, unhappiness, mental upset and illness because of our physical state? The profound ability of Reiki Healing is that it has the power to open our mind – and our spirit – to understanding, accepting and working with the root-causes of our ‘dis-ease’ – whether they are physical, mental, spiritual, or a combination of all three.
Reiki releases our resistance: receiving Reiki and allowing it to work within us enables us to work with it. Instead of our normal mental response to resist all that we perceive to be negative, disturbing and destroying in our life we discover that we are able to accept it – it is there, it has happened – we cannot turn back the clock. This release of resistance releases the tension in our mind and body which engenders a deep peace and relaxation. In turn this enables our own natural healing ability, activated by universal life energy and ’spirit,’ to take over. This healing works on all levels, the body, mind and spirit, as and how it needs to in order to promote the body’s own regenerative self-healing.
There is now a great deal of research into the working of ‘energy’, within the universe and within our human selves. There are also scientifically researched books now being published linking the application of energy via specific electronic instruments – the Tens Machine, the Sensar, the Q Strip etc., with the channelling of energy via human application – i.e. that the ‘energy’ transmitted is exactly the same!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness, that most frightens us…..

1994 Inaugural Speech
A Japanese system of natural healing called Reiki is based on channeling healing energy through the hands. This healing art was lost for centuries but was rediscovered by Dr Usui in the early 1900’s in Japan. Reiki is a special kind of healing energy that has its own consciousness. The practitioner does not guide Reiki energy.
This healing energy guides itself by communicating with the clients higher self and goes naturally to where the client needs healing.
When a practitioner of Reiki, is doing a healing they sometimes feel heat or cold or tingling in the hands when the hands pass over an area that needs to be healed. The Reiki energy will automatically go where the healing needs to be done.
A Reiki Practitioner does not need to learn how to do Reiki as you would learn other healing techniques. Reiki is simply passed on to the student through a Reiki Master. This is called an attunement. The Reiki master uses different symbols to pass on for different levels of Reiki. There are 3 levels of Reiki and the Master Level.
It is a very simple and easy process. The student can immediately start giving Reiki treatments. To start giving the treatments the Reiki Practitioner draws the symbols for what level they are at, in the palms of the hands to activate the healing energy. Your intentions alone can activate the energy itself to do a healing. The Practitioner
is shown where to place the hands on the person to be healed. Then the healing Begins. When you are healing with energy time and space are irrelevant. Therefore Reiki Healing can also be sent at a distance. This is called long distant healing.
In 1938 Mrs Takata brought Reiki to the western world. After the second world war Mrs Takata was the only practicing Reiki Master in the world.
She was the only teacher to be taught from and she was very rigid in her teaching trying to keep the tradition going. Some students became more concerned in keeping the tradition they ignored there own intuition and inner knowledge.
In 1970 to become a master she would charge a fee of $10,000 dollars for the Master Level training. This would discourage many would be teachers. She discouraged students to expand their many different levels of guidance. Her way would be the only way.
Eventually Reiki lost some of it vitality for each teacher passed on a little less than the time before. As time went on and more teachers were trained the price to become a master went down. The nature of the Reiki energy began to heal its own expression. Deeper aspects of healing began to surface. Reiki was found to heal deeper and deeper.
Students were being allowed to branch off and listen to their own guidance and healing techniques. They began experimenting, adding knowledge and talking and exchanging information with others.
By doing this depth was added to their understanding and they developed their own style, improving the effectiveness of their own healing abilities.
Because people have opened up Reiki has been able to evolve, develop and grow.
Reiki heals and guides all those who practice it. To choose a teacher you want to pass the attunements on to you use your own guidance and be aware of what this persons energy feels like to you, Then decide.
All About Reiki Healing
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009Reiki is a holistic therapy which brings about healing on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy,” so Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” The spiritual practice was first developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui who after a 3-week fast and meditation on Mount Kurama, in Japan, who claimed to receive the ability of “healing without energy depletion.” Reiki teachings say that there is an inexhaustible, universal “life force” spiritual energy that can be used to induce a healing effect on any number of diseases or illnesses.
Believers in Reiki say that anyone can gain access to this energy by an atonement process carried out by a Reiki Master. Energy is said to flow through the practitioner’s hands whenever the hands are placed on, or held near a potential recipient. Some stress the importance of the practitioner’s intention or “presence” in this process, while others claim that the energy is drawn by the recipient’s injury to activate or enhance the natural healing processes. The Reiki belief is that the energy is “intelligent”, so diagnosis is unnecessary. A second level of training, which includes another initiation, is said to equip the practitioner to perform Reiki treatments from a distance; the method uses special symbols which create a temporary connection between the practitioner and the Reiki recipient, no matter the location, and then to send the energy.
There is no scientific evidence for either the existence of ki or any mechanism for its manipulation, and a systematic review of randomized clinical trials conducted in 2008 did not support the efficacy of Reiki or its recommendation for use in the treatment of any condition. Nevertheless, many people have reported amazing results with Reiki, which feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well being.
