Pain Before Pleasure – My Journey into Reiki

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Back in May ‘07 I became a Reiki master. Years before I had become a Reiki 1 and 2 practitioner as I had wanted to heal other people. I did both courses in the same weekend. I’d been asking myself for years “What can I do in order to help other people heal?”
The thought that I may need healing myself was never a factor in my process or decision to study Reiki. I soon knew that Reiki worked as I’d had a very profound experience after my initiation. This had followed self-treatments for six weeks after my course.
Despite this, I had huge reservations as to the intent and motivation of my Reiki master. I clearly had my own issues going on at the time and he was the perfect target for my projections. Consequently, I did not seek his guidance and proceeded on my own, using my intuitions to assess the energies that I was channelling. Since I was working night shifts I used my breaks to give myself long treatments.
On that occasion I soon developed a large pain in my chest, at the location of the heart. Fortunately, as I was working in a Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the time I knew the symptoms were asymptomatic of angina and just trusted the process. This was despite a daily increase in the pain after each self-treatment.
After six weeks the pain was so great that I could barely drive my car, since it was too painful to turn the steering wheel. I cancelled all of my shifts at work and treated myself for a few more days, and now my sleep started to suffer.
One day, whilst in the bath, I had a huge catharsis and began to see my life flash before me. Everything that I had done was starting to become apparent and I started to wonder what message I would have left the world if I had died just then. I cried for England as the bath filled up further.
I spent the next three days acting as though I was Scrooge on Christmas morning! This led to me telling all of my friends and family, who were around me at the time, how much they meant to me, whilst shedding plenty more tears. With each proclamation the pain eased a little more.
Despite the profundity of this experience I stopped using my Reiki, except for the odd, intermittent treatment, for several years afterwards. During my Reiki 1 and 2 course I met two very dear friends, Alan and Annette. We have remained in contact ever since and shared our respective journeys.
When Alan asked Annette and I if we wanted to become Reiki masters last year I decided that it sounded like a good idea. He had found a Reiki master that he liked and we would need to meet up four times over three months.
We attended the course and, like before, I started to do a few treatments on myself. Shortly after I developed a pain in my shoulder, which worsened over time and Reiki. As there was plenty going on in my life during that period I had not considered the synchronicity of becoming a Reiki master and developing this pain.
My NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) training had led me to believe that I had created this pain for a purpose, so I set out to find what I needed to do to resolve it. I addressed issues with family and friends over the following months, which yielded numerous positive outcomes, yet the pain still remained. I performed Time-Line Therapy and self-hypnosis, releasing many things but still the pain remained.
I then attended a therapist who dealt with past-lives who regressed me to a battle numerous lifetimes ago where I received a spear in my shoulder. Surely this was the breakthrough that I had been looking for? Apparently not. Although the pain lessened considerably, I was left with a residual ache.
Earlier that year I had picked up a form from the Reiki Association, telling me about the annual Reiki gathering. Last September I decided that I would attend, as it would be a good opportunity to find out a bit more about Reiki and meet other practitioners.
During the gathering I experienced some huge energetic and emotional shifts, which frequently had me on the verge of tears. I was also humbled by an array of profoundly talented masters and practitioners.
During a group healing with a wonderfully insightful couple, Rosemary and Trevor, I was informed that the pain was due to a chip that I had on my shoulder. They also brought many other profound insights into my consciousness, giving me a healing stone to help me on my path. I was surprised; as I thought that I had forgiven everyone that I could think of, whom I’d had an issue with.
Further treatments during the gathering intensified the emotions that I had been experiencing and several questions surfaced for me. Fortunately, I was helped by the insights and healing energies of the attendees of the event.
Then, finally, on the last day I sat next to another Reiki master, Ian, and started chatting to him. He listened to my Reiki story and very gently informed me of a couple of things that I needed to know. Firstly, that I was not ready to initiate any master’s into Reiki as I was clearly not ready. Indeed, watching many of the Reiki 2 practitioners during the gathering had already made me realise that I had a long way to go in order to match their skill.
Secondly, he let me know how important it was to get permission from your Reiki 1 master before getting another master to further the Reiki journey. Suddenly, I had a light bulb moment. This led to the following e-mail correspondence with my first Reiki master, which, in turn, led to another cathartic moment and the release of all pain in my shoulder.
Dear Reiki Master,
I realise that you will probably not remember me, yet it is important that I write this mail. I took a Reiki 1 and 2 weekend with you about six years ago and felt very negative about you and your teaching style afterwards. The consequence has been that it has taken me this long to understand the error of my perception.
My Reiki journey has been confusing and resulted in periods of neglect, self-doubt and disillusionment with regard to my spiritual and healing practice. During that weekend I felt that there were too many students and not enough opportunities to ask the many questions that I had at the time.
When some of your teachings were contradicted by other Reiki masters I decided that I had been short-changed and chose not to contact you about it.
Although you have not been consciously in my thoughts for several years now I have recently found my way back into Reiki through becoming a Reiki master a few months ago.
Recent attendance of a Reiki masters’ gathering, with The Reiki Association, has caused some powerful energetic shifts within me and led me to talk about my early Reiki experiences. Once again, I found myself feeling very negative.
However, I now know that my negativity towards you was only a projection of my negativity towards myself. I am now in a place where I am ready to own it and apologise humbly to you for any energetic consequences that may have happened as a result of my actions.
I would also like to acknowledge the gift that you gave me during that weekend and how it has now led me to a place of very profound, deep and meaningful healing. I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart and offer my unreserved apologies for my lack of insight into the nature of Reiki and what happened to me during my initiations with you.
Peace, Love, light and healing energy,
Adam Shaw.
Dear Adam
Apologies for delay – have been in Mexico building our cancer centre, conducting research studies with children in schools with ADHD, and developing projects with the Mexican NHS.
Your email is certainly appreciated. Although you will discover as you tread your path that it is not important what a minority of others think about your work. There will always be those who do not understand – and there are countless reasons why they cannot understand.
The most important things to know as we work our soul missions are that
1. we are coming from the best possible motivation of love to help our world
2. we are attempting to help the highest majority of people who seek our help
Blessings for your good works
Reiki Master
I may not be a master of Reiki yet in anything but title – though healing comes in many forms.
My healing came the day I changed my question to the universe. It is only through honestly asking myself on a daily basis “what do I need to be consciously aware of to achieve the maximum healing in the minimum time” that led me back to Reiki.
Real, sustainable healing occurred for me the second that I decided to take responsibility for everything that has ever happened in my life. Only through this process of self-empowerment can sustainable healing occur.
My Reiki journey has led me to one of the most profound experiences of my life. For this I am filled with gratitude.

What Is Reiki? …And How Can Energy Healing Help You? Part 1 of 3

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Until around 2000 years ago most people with varying degrees of success practiced laying-on-of-hands as a healing method. Of course, there were the famous few who were really proficient at healing. These great ones were thought to have a special gift because of their healing results.

Very few realized that everyone is gifted similarly. The great ones such as Apollonius, The Buddha, and the most well known, Jesus, to name the three you may have heard the most about simply had learned the procedure more thoroughly.

Reiki (pronounced “ray-key”) is a spiritual healing technique, which involves, but is not limited to, the laying-on-of-hands. It was rediscovered in the late 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan, and is thought to have originated as a health practice thousands of years ago.

Reiki is a very simple, yet powerful healing art, you can use on yourself as well as on others, and anyone can be easily taught how to do it. Even children are inclined toward Reiki. It helps them cope with the outside world.

Reiki is not a religion, cult, or new age, but it is spiritual in nature and connects you to the Source Energy that most people call God. Its practice brings inner peace and joy.

Easy To Learn And Use

“Reiki” is derived from two Japanese words—”rei,” meaning “soul” or “spirit,” and “ki,” meaning “life force energy.” It is Universal energy that seems to have its own consciousness (a mind of its own) and is able to provide exactly what is needed on all levels. The practitioner using Reiki should be neutral and simply flow the healing energy.

We all are hard-wired to flow the Universal Life Force Energy. It’s a natural ability for the human body to be able to flow this healing energy.

Just like your computer (if you have one) is hard-wired to run Windows or do Word processing. All your computer needs is the program – the software. You already have the ability to flow this healing energy for yourself and for others. The Reiki training-includes attunements and symbols which are like installing software into the mind. It is a “program”, which gives you permission to become a healer and flow source energy.

Training teaches you how to go about using the healing techniques and the attunements (software)that multiplies the amount of Reiki energy you can flow.

Reiki Treatments Work By Dissolving Or Eliminating Toxic Energy

Toxic energy and emotional energy blockages are found on many levels of being: the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Energy healing will ease the pain on all these levels.

Becoming Reiki helps people connect to Source Energy, which brings joy, happiness and a deep sense of well-being. The 911 attack on WTC caused such terror in the hearts that the trauma disconnected people from Source Energy. That is the main reason everyone felt so bad.

Reiki reconnects you with Source Energy. In the center of chaos you will still feel safe and protected.

Reiki and my Dog

Sunday, December 20th, 2009

Indiana is my steadfast companion. Not quite 5 years old, Indy is an excellent representative of the boxer breed. He’s beautiful fawn color, with a black ‘mask’. Big black eyes that are amazingly expressive. Sometimes I forget that Indy doesn’t actually talk to me. You see he always has something to say. He grunts, groans, snorts, whines and generally makes his feelings clear on just about any subject. Always up for a good wrestling game or long walk, Indy is just as happy to follow me from room to room and simply lay on the floor close to whatever I am doing. He’s loving, gentle, playful, sassy, chatty, obedient and smart and just a swell guy to have as my buddy. Here’s the thing. I think there is something seriously wrong with my friend. A week ago I noticed him stumbling now and then coming down the stairs or even walking through the hallway. Now this is not completely unusual for a young boxer. They get excited or their attention wanders and sometimes it’s as though their feet almost get tangled. This is not what was happening. The next day I realized that his head was tilted, just as he does when I’m talking to him and he’s paying serious attention. Except now it’s that way all the time. With his lip drooping on one side the drooling is now constant; it was definitely time for a visit to the vet. Our vet is amazing. Indy loves to go to the office and has to be reminded all of the time about his manners when he’s there. Everyone there gets lots of sloppy boxer kisses and hugs, in turn they seem to have an endless supply of doggy treats and always time for a good ear scratch. Dr. Stefanie was not able to diagnose what was going on with my buddy except for a mild case of doggy acne, easily treated with an antibiotic. She asked what his behavior was like and was very interested when I told her that Indy had been asking for more Reiki the last day or two. Dr. Stefanie had never heard of Reiki and was very curious. She was fascinated by the fact that Indy lets me now when he wants to receive it as well as when he is done. She also found it very curious that since this ailment had started just a few days prior, Indy has been asking for more Reiki and accepting for a longer period of time. While she didn’t totally understand it, she encouraged the continued practice.Since then, Indy has also been to a vet internist and again no official diagnosis although again the veterinarian took the time to patiently and kindly remind me that boxers are very prone to cancer. The good news is that we don’t know that’s what is progressing. As of today, only a short week after all of this has begun, I really don’t know what to expect. Indy is still asking for Reiki frequently, accepting it for longer periods of time than he had in the past. I hope that the energy is helping to heal whatever is afflicting him, it’s my belief that it is helping. He’s still ’tilted’ and continues to be show weakness on the right side, but he’s started to play again. I really missed that in the past week. We’re all up at the lake and yesterday Shadow, the neighbor dog came over. They started playing and running up and down the yard. Each went to the lake for a drink of water and when Indy shook his head he actually tipped right over into the muck, making him a candidate for a full bath before 10am. It was very funny! But the good news is that he got up and continued playing. As a holistic life coach, one of the things I talk to my clients about all of the time is the fact that every aspect of our lives affects all others. This week has been a very real reminder of that for me. Not knowing what is happening with Indy has affected every person in my family, including my grown sons who no longer live with us. In many ways, Indy is continuing to teach me and to remind me of lessons already learned.I will continue to offer Reiki to Indiana, he enjoys it and I believe it is helping him to heal on whatever level he is meant to be healed. It also offers me peace as I know that Reiki works on all levels, mind, body and spirit. Indy deserves all of that and more. This has been a great reminder to me, to offer Reiki to all of those I care about, friends and family, two legged or four. I will also be making it clear to coaching and Reiki clients that there are very real benefits to our animal companions when they receive Reiki. And why not? They deserve the best we can offer them; they already offer us all of their love and devotion.Wishing you a fabulous week, filled with love gratitude and a deep appreciation for the animals in our lives.Warmly,Sandy

What Is Reiki? …And How Can Energy Healing Help You? Part 2 of 3

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

Reiki is a natural healing system that millions around the world are using to balance energy, remove stagnant energy, and restore peace and harmony in the body, mind, and spirit.

Since the methods were rediscovered and renamed Reiki by Dr. Usui, people in nearly every country of the world are again using “the laying-on-of-hands” method for healing the physical body in one form or the other.

Many registered nurses, as well as massage therapists are finding that Reiki is the perfect compliment to their hands-on health practice.

Reiki Helps To Create A Balanced Environment

A balanced environment within one’s being is important so that healing can take place. Healers who have been attuned to the Reiki healing “flow” find that their natural healing energies have been enhanced. They also describe their healing energies as being more powerful and directed than before. Many traditional health practitioners are adding Reiki to their credentials.

Reiki Is Transferred To Students By A Reiki Master/Teacher

The Reiki master passes the training through a series of attunements. During the attunement process, sacred healing symbols are sealed into your energy field, so that you can flow the higher vibrations of energy. The attunement process opens you up permanently to the Reiki energy so that you can give Reiki treatments to yourself and others.

When you are attuned you become an open channel (or pipe) for the Reiki energy to flow through to yourself and others. The energy gently and constantly circulates in your body filling your heart area first, and flows out from that point on through your hands. When you place your hands on an object, whether it is a person, a pet, your plants, your food, or a crystal, the healing Reiki energy flows into that object as well.

Reiki raises the vibrational frequency of the person receiving the treatment.

Sickness is low vibrational frequency.

Wellness, health and joy are higher vibrational frequencies.

Three Benefits In Learning Reiki:

Reiki works well with all healing modalities traditional and alternative, such as: nursing, massage therapy, Acupressure, Acupuncturists, Bach Flower, Chakra Balancing, Chi Gong, Chi Kung, Chi Nei Tsang, Cosmic Energetic Healing, Laser Reiki, Crystal Work, Dowsers, Essential Oils, Falun Gong, Feng Shui, Flower Essences, Gemstone Therapy, Healing Touch, Body workers, Homeopathic Medicines, Hypnotherapy, Tai Chi, Vibrational Healers, Yoga, Hellerwork, and all Holistic activities.

These healers above are adding Reiki certification to their tool kit. Mothers, kindergarten teachers, and schoolteachers are also learning Reiki because it makes their jobs easier.

The difference between the Reiki and Reconnective energies

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

This article explains about the differences between the Reiki and Reconnective energies. It covers an explanation of both energies, why they are different and how they are best applied in daily practice.

What is Reiki?

Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is Japanese for Universal Life Force. Reiki exists in and around us. A Reiki healer is able to tap into this limitless energy for the purposes of bringing others back into wholeness and balance.

Reiki Healing Sessions can:

Reduce stress and cause deep relaxation Increase sense of wellbeing Reduce illness Reduce depression and anxiety Increase awareness, creativity Reduce pain Negative patterns may disappear Balance your body’s energies Help with the transition at the end of life, more comfortable, less anxious Can be sent to a situation

How Reiki Heals

We are alive because life force is flowing through us. Life force flows within the physical body and it also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and tissues of the physical body.

The life force is responsive to thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings attach themselves to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of life force. This diminishes the vital function of the organs and cells of the physical body.  Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibratory level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to break up and fall away. Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.

Reiki cleanses the body of built up toxins, relieves pain, soothes shock, calms the mind and emotions, and accelerates the body’s natural ability to heal itself at the same time promoting a state of total relaxation and well-being. Once a person has been opened up to become a “channel” for Reiki, concentrated universal life force energy will flow through their hands of its own accord and they will retain this ability for the rest of their life. Reiki in no way conflicts with medical procedures and in fact supports and enhances all medical treatments. Reiki can be incorporated effectively into the healing arts practiced by health professionals from traditional and alternative medicine.

What is Reconnective energy?

Reconnective Healing connects us to the fullness of the Universe as it reconnects us to the fullness of our being and who we are, not just through a new set of healing frequencies but possibly through an entirely new bandwidth.  The existence of these frequencies has clearly demonstrated itself in practice as well as in science laboratories.

Reconnective Healing is often a life-changing experience, allowing for the healing of the body, mind, and spirit. These concretely felt energies are initiated by a Reconnective Healing Practitioner at the start of your session, and continue working with you long after your visit has ended. Through your participation in these sessions, you will be forever changed, operating at, and attuned to, a higher frequency than ever before.

Reconnective Healing can benefit everyone, whether facilitated in person one-on-one or via a distant healing. It can provide wonderful benefits for the dying and is commonly used with animals.

What It Means to be Healed

Healing is a return to balance. It is sometimes equated with a medical cure, but the concept of healing is actually broader than that. “Healing, which may or may not encompass physical cure, is the process of positive, empowering, and progressive reconciliation and transformation in a person’s relationship to his reality, condition, history, and circumstance, inclusive of any diseases. Healing refers to positive change in the impact of disease on a person’s life, feelings, consciousness, decisions, and actions. In healing, a person’s experience of disease, and the effects of disease on the body and mind, change for the better, whether or not physical cure is affected.” (Dr. Beverly Potter and Dan Joy).

Healing can manifest in many different forms, and not just the physical. You might become more peaceful within yourself; you might begin to relate differently to family members or friends, experiencing more love, forgiveness and acceptance; you might find that the disease that has challenged you transforms into restored balance or harmony in your life; your pain may ease and you might feel more joy; or you may simply transition, knowing that God is with you and that your loved ones will be OK.

Every health challenge is a combination of the physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional. We simply classify it according to its predominate characteristic.

But Reconnective Healing doesn’t specifically “treat” anything and a Reconnective Healer does not diagnose. We are a simply the conduit. If in its presence you allow yourself to come back into balance, as many people do, then you do. You just do. At the end of his book Dr. Pearl says, “Some things are difficult to explain; miracles speak for themselves.”

That being said, those of you with a more scientific bent are encouraged to learn more about quantum physics and healing.

Which Energy is Best?

Both energies originate from the same Universal Source. Both are Universal Life Force. But they are different because they exist as different bandwidths. Reiki is a gentle flowing energy which slowly heals the aura. It typically flows from crown to feet or from feet to crown.  Reiki is best used for relaxation, release of stress, reducing pain, and enveloping the client with Life Force. Reiki is also wonderful for sending to situations to positively change them for the better.

Reconnective energy comes at you from all directions and you can feel your muscles being moved. Reconnective energy is more intense and actively does work. Reconnective energy is more like a strong laser beam while Reiki is more like a wide ray of energy. Reconnective energy deals more with going after the cause of the symptom and directly affecting change on the cause so the result is healing. Reconnective energy is more for healing physical, mental, emotional, spiritual problems in the aura whereas Reiki is more of a mist of Life Force enveloping the client and better for healing situations and for gentle relaxation.

Typically I choose the energy to work with depending on the needs of the client. If a client has problems with relationships or money I would use Reiki. If I client just wants some pain relief I would use Reiki. If I client wants the back problem to go away, I would use Reconnective energy. If the client wants the migraines to go away, Reconnective energy is quicker acting, although Reiki could work for some pain relief.

Every healing is situation dependent. Trust your inner instincts and have complete faith in the energies. As the client has faith in their own healing, the results are quite often miraculous.

This article taught you about the differences between the Reiki and Reconnective energies. You learned about both energies, why they are different and how they are best applied in daily practice.

All About Reiki Healing

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Reiki is a holistic therapy which brings about healing on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words – Rei which means “God’s Wisdom or the Higher Power” and Ki which is “life force energy,” so Reiki is actually “spiritually guided life force energy.” The spiritual practice was first developed in 1922 by Mikao Usui who after a 3-week fast and meditation on Mount Kurama, in Japan, who claimed to receive the ability of “healing without energy depletion.”  Reiki teachings say that there is an inexhaustible, universal “life force” spiritual energy that can be used to induce a healing effect on any number of diseases or illnesses.

Believers in Reiki say that anyone can gain access to this energy by an atonement process carried out by a Reiki Master. Energy is said to flow through the practitioner’s hands whenever the hands are placed on, or held near a potential recipient. Some stress the importance of the practitioner’s intention or “presence” in this process, while others claim that the energy is drawn by the recipient’s injury to activate or enhance the natural healing processes. The Reiki belief is that the energy is “intelligent”, so diagnosis is unnecessary.  A second level of training, which includes another initiation, is said to equip the practitioner to perform Reiki treatments from a distance; the method uses special symbols which create a temporary connection between the practitioner and the Reiki recipient, no matter the location, and then to send the energy.

There is no scientific evidence for either the existence of ki or any mechanism for its manipulation, and a systematic review of randomized clinical trials conducted in 2008 did not support the efficacy of Reiki or its recommendation for use in the treatment of any condition.  Nevertheless, many people have reported amazing results with Reiki, which feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and well being.
