The Healing Art of Reiki

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Reiki is a Japanese type of spiritual practice also used for stress reduction and relaxation. It is a technique that also helps promote healing either for self or for other people. It is characterized as a practice of “laying of hands”.

The healing powers of the technique are based on the idea that there is an unseen “life force energy” that flows through each person. This life force is said to be the reason why people are alive. When one’s life force energy is low, then people are likely to get sick or feel weak. If the life force is high, people fell healthy and happy.

Reiki is also a form of meditation used as a type of therapy for treating physical, emotional, and mental diseases. The name Reiki is taken from two Japanese characters that describe energy itself. The word “rei”, which means “unseen” or “spiritual” and “ki” which means “energy” or “life force” is combined to become Reiki. In English, its meaning is usually given as “universal life energy”.

It was Mikao Usui who was known to have developed Reiki in 20th century Japan. Story has it that Usui received the ability of healing after going through three weeks of fasting and meditating on top of Mount Kurama. Practitioners of Reiki use a technique similar to that of the laying on of hands.

This action is said to promote the channeling of “healing energy” to another person. The energy flows through the palms and brings along with it healing powers that can be used for self-treatment as well as for treating others.

Reiki is a simple, natural as well as safe method of dispensing spiritual healing and self-improvement. It is said to be effective in providing alternative treatment for virtually every known illness and malady. Not only that, Reiki also helps create an added beneficial effect, that of spiritual healing. This method is also said to work well when combined with other medical or therapeutic techniques to help relieve side effects and promote recovery.

Reiki, although seen as a very powerful healing technique, is an amazingly simple to learn. Reiki and the ability to use it effectively cannot be taught in the usual sense. The skill is said to be “transferred” to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is not merely learned but is passed on by a Reiki master to the student during a gathering known as “attunement”. After the skill has been passed on, it allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of “life force energy” that can then be used to improve one’s health and enhance the one’s quality of life.

Although the practice of Reiki may be spiritual in nature, it is not considered as a religion. There are no set of beliefs that one should learn about before learning to practice the technique known as Reiki. The practice does not depend on any form of dogma.

It will work whether the student believes it or not. But it is said that the practice of Reiki helps people to keep in touch of their spiritual selves rather than the intellectual concept that it provides.

The practice of Reiki also aims to develop and promote living in harmony with others. Aside from practicing Reiki and its principles, the founder of the Reiki system, Mikao Usui also recommends the practice of simple ethical ideals that can lead to peace and harmony among people. Getting to know what Reiki is may help people not only become a healing channel but also a tool to promote peace among other people.

The Anugraha Reiki System of Healing

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Anugraha Reiki is one of the many forms of the popular Reiki system of healing. Reiki has its origins traced back to Japan where the practice was developed by a Tendai Budhhist named Mikao Usui in 1922. He was said to have discovered the technique after a 21-day retreat on Mount Kurama.

After undergoing meditation, fasting and prayer during the retreat, Usui claimed to have received some mystical revelation and was handed down the knowledge as well as the spiritual power for healing.

Reiki has been known to be fairly easy and simple to use. Everyone is said to be able to employ the system to achieve spiritual healing of self as well as others. Teaching the system usually involves three parts which are better known as degrees. The first degree usually teaches the basic theories and procedures with using Reiki energy.

This energy is said to pass through a channel in the body which can be opened by way of four “attunements” given by the Reiki master to a student. The first degree of training also involves the learning of certain hand placements that allow the Reiki energy to heal people.

The second degree of the Reiki training involves the use of the Reiki symbols and how they can be used to enhance healing. Students are also taught how to provide distant healing. This will allow people to be able to heal others without being physically present. The third degree of the Reiki training involves making the student become a Reiki master. As a Reiki master, a person may now be able to attune others to Reiki and teach the system to others.

Different forms of Reiki now exist and each one of them provides different ways of providing spiritual healing. One of them is the Anugraha Reiki which is a mystical healing art that originated in India. The word “Anugraha” means Grace, which is considered as one of the five functions of the Divine that ultimately leads to Liberation or “Mukti”. Anugraha can also refer to the Power of Revelation. On another level, the word can also relate to Mercy.

Just like the Japanese form of Reiki, the first level of Anugraha Reiki focuses on self healing, self awareness, replenishment and perfecting relationship. A Diksha or attunement is given to help activate seldom used parts of the brain. A simple yet advanced spiritual practice is taught to help transform a person’s consciousness and result to deep states of awareness within 30 days.

The second level of the Anugraha Reiki focuses on healing others. During this period, sacred sounds are being taught that is said to help invoke positive consciousness. An advanced form of meditation is also taught. A type of special mantra used to invoke the presence is taught along with the techniques for doing healing work both through personal and long distance means.

The third degree initiation of Anugraha Reiki involves the teaching of the esoteric use of important Reiki symbols that can be used for different means such as for astral projection, meditation, altering time or space, bridging the worlds of life and death, and easing the transition process. There are two additional master symbols are also revealed.

For a student to succeed and qualify for the third degree of teaching, he or she should already be relatively clear of his or her own physical and psychological suffering.

Reiki and Imperfection

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Imperfection may be a negative thing. But it is an inherent characteristic of everything around us. There’s nothing perfect in this world. And that means each one of us has an imperfection to think about. Yet with our flaws, valuable lessons in life are learned.

Life brings wonderful lessons. Anything wrong that might have happened to you could be treated as a learning experience. Life has many imperfections. But you can use those imperfections make you a better individual.

In Reiki, healing is achieved at different rates. Like learning, it comes to a person in a way different from another. It is very important for everyone who is learning or practicing Reiki to realize this fact. Every person has varying degrees of opening his heart, accepting truth, and summoning energy. And the person who is always open to learning and his imperfections develops more gloriously.

When imperfection is not realized or accepted, frustration, fear, and doubt would creep into your mind and affect your entire life. Reiki can be used to fight off all these negativities inside you. Its power can be used to help you in your life’s struggles. Feel the healing energy of Reiki inside you. Then think about the fact that every situation carries a lesson – a lesson that you can use to make you develop better as a person. And so you’ve got to face your everyday challenges. And learn each lesson. Then grow in peace, joy, and love.

Life is a journey. Wake up each day enveloped with anticipation, gratitude, and joy. Expect life’s lessons to be delivered to you well. You are part of the plan and everything happens as it should.

The last thing you should become is to be afraid. Use Reiki to remove all the darkness around you. Soar greatly towards the heavens. The light will shine brightly upon you if you do the right things. Free yourself. Be peaceful and calm. Hear the melodious sounds of a sweet song. Open yourself up to the happiness, joy, and love around you. You are called to perfection. Use the energy of Reiki to fly towards it!

Reiki Self-Attunement

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

Usui Reiki attunement is the process of cleansing the body and mind and inviting the intelligent power or life force to be a conduit for healing of oneself and others. Traditionally, this attunement was supposed to be carried out by a person who had attained the status of Reiki Master, carried back in history to the original sensei.
Some practitioners have begun teaching a self-attunement process that they claim is just as effective as the traditional methods.
In order to carry out a reiki self-attunement, you must know and understand four of the reiki symbols. The first symbol is known as Cho Ku Rei. It’s commonly called the Power Symbol and roughly translated means “Put all the power of the universe here”. During a traditional attunement, this symbol is drawn on the dominant hand of the practitioner and on the head of the recipient.
The second symbol used in reiki is the Sei-hei-ki or The Emotional Symbol. The English translation is “God and Humanity Become One.” The traditional Reiki teaches this symbol during Level II, and uses it when there is emotional build-up or stress. It is invoked by the practitioner in the same way as Cho Ku Rei.
The third symbol needed for attunements is Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen, The Distant Healing Symbol. The English translation for this symbol is “May the Buddha in me connect to the Buddha in you.” This is perhaps the heart of the entire Reiki healing philosophy. Again, the invocation of Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is the same as the first two.
Finally, the most powerful of the four symbols needed for attunement is Dai Ko Myo. This symbol is only taught at the Master level and is meant to heal the spiritual condition of the user. Roughly translated it would be called “Great Being of the Universe Shine on Me.”
Once you have memorized the four symbols above or drawn them out for easy access during the attunement process. You should begin the self-attunement by cleansing the room by drawing all four symbols in the air. Drawing the Cho Ku Rei and Dai Ko Myo on the palms of your hands is followed by drawing the Cho Ku Rei on each of the Chakras of your body then in front of your chest.
Next, sit in an attitude of prayer or meditation and visualize light coming down from heaven and gradually filling your entire body through the chakras beginning with the crown chakra. Once you have completed this phase, and then individually imagine each of the symbols coming down through the crown chakra all the way to the root chakra. You can visualize each individual symbol as being inside a ball of red fire as it passes through the white light.
After all four symbols are part of you, open your hands and visualize each upon your hands, imagining each sinking into your hands and becoming part of you.
Finally on the back of your neck, visualize a small golden door which can be permanently sealed in a symbolism which your mind will accept. It may be a permanent seal or removing a lock or anything else that makes you symbolize permanent closure, so that the self-attunement is complete and forever.
This completes the Reiki self-attunement process and allows you to be a practitioner of Reiki healing arts.

Reiki And The Healing Sound

Sunday, December 6th, 2009

Reiki healing has a lot to do with harmony, music, sounds, and drums. Healing through Reiki requires rhythm. And that’s something that has to be achieved for healing to take effect.
During one’s childhood, adults tend to see children rather than hear them. This concept has to change because in today world, people are remembered with the sound that they make. Sounds are a person’s participation in the symphony of life. Music plays all within and around us.
Reiki is most effective when healing sounds are planted within the healer. Try to watch children exploring their world. During the entire experience, they would touch, gurgle, laugh, and at times, cry. Children live their life with enthusiasm, jolliness, and love. They rarely have worries and their world affects them in the same way that they lovingly affect it. If their sounds were not silenced, they can express their delight freely.
Observing kids in all their glory leaves the observer with awe. But more importantly, it becomes a fulfilling experience for both parties. Joy flows through the scene as children enjoy life in their own little way. Through the eyes of the children, it becomes easier for adults to enjoy life and the whole world.
Drums are good instruments that can produce rhythm. Drums can be played even by an amateur musician. Like children, everybody can explore this instrument and probably, enjoy playing it. Let the child in you learn how to use drums in your Reiki healing sessions. Interact with the drum to produce the healing sound that can boost healing.
And like a child, you will be filled with joy, enthusiasm, and sometimes, even sadness. All these emotions can flow through the drums. Sing with the drum. Dance with it. Let go of your hidden emotions that could have been silenced several years before. Let the healing sound of the drum flow through you.
Reiki can be incorporated with a lot of other energies and drumming is just one of them. The combination of deep healing and powerful vibration is immense. This is why Reiki Drumming sessions are conceptualized and are later on used regularly in most Reiki healing sessions.
However, there are a lot of things that transform to become a drum. The musical instrument itself isn’t the only one that can emit a healing sound using the loving stroke of your hands. Try to imagine yourself being young once more and discovering the world around you. Remember the enthusiasm you feel as you hear and touch something that produces a sound.
There is joy created as interaction happens. Your heart can create a song from within you. Reiki energy can rise from there. You can produce healing powers through the silence of your heart. Celebrate the presence of sound from inside you. Feel the way your heart beats as you stroke the drum. Feel that rhythm and be one with it. Your existence is already a rhythm. Use it to awaken your life and your presence in the world around you. Hear the songs sung by your heart.

What to Look for In a Reiki Course

Saturday, December 5th, 2009

Reiki is a traditional form of healing, with its roots in Japan, but which has in the last few decades spread and gained popularity in many other parts of the world. To become an effective Reiki practitioner, one has to take a training course. These courses are normally offered by people who have attained the third degree of Reiki training, since it is the attainment of that third degree of Reiki training that gives one the title of a Reiki master, with the ability to confer ‘attunements’ to new student practitioners. And in order to perform Reiki healing either on oneself or on others, one needs to make use of the attunements which in turn can only be attained from a Reiki master, meaning that Reiki is an art you have to learn by signing up for a course; and it is therefore not something you can learn by yourself, as you would not be able to confer the relevant attunements to yourself. There are numerous people offering Reiki courses, and if you are considering taking up one, you will naturally find yourself having to make a choice of one over the other. And as a criterion for choosing a Reiki course, there are a number of things you need to look for.The first and foremost thing you need to look for in a Reiki course is the school of thought the people offering the course subscribe to. This is because there are many schools of thought in Reiki, and you need to see whether the philosophy of the school of thought the practitioners of Reiki offering the course subscribe to is compatible with your expectations of Reiki. This is in turn because there are schools of thought in Reiki teaching that emphasize on the self-healing properties of Reiki (where the ideal state would be having everybody subscribe to Reiki for their own healing), while there are those that view that view Reiki as a specialized field, with an aim of learning it to heal others in the same way a few people go to medical school to learn medicine in order to be able to treat the rest of the population. The other major thing you need to look at in a Reiki course is the Reiki master offering it – and see if he or she is a person you would love working with. Remember, as mentioned earlier, Reiki is a discipline that depends to a large extent on master to student impartation, and therefore not one of things where the role of the teacher is detached from the learning process. The knowledge and experience of the master in Reiki practice are other things you might also want to look at, in addition to rapport between you and him or her.Costs vary between the Reiki courses offered by different schools, and this too might be a factor you can look at in choosing a Reiki course. According to one authoritative website on this subject, Reiki courses for the first degree, for instance vary from between $75 at the lowest end, to $200 at the higher end, with the costs at the master teacher level varying between $500 and $10,000 – meaning that comparing the figures (without compromising training standards) can yield worthwhile savings.

How to Heal a Person Using Reiki

Friday, December 4th, 2009

To understand how to heal a person using Reiki, it is important to be first well grounded in the basic principles of Reiki. Reiki is itself a traditional form of healing, with roots in Japan and which was originally developed by Mikao Usui, out of what Mikao described as a mystical revelation. The system was further developed by its early practitioners (who had learnt directly from Mikao) most notably Chujiro Hayashi, who in turn taught Hawayo Takata, who is credited with spreading and popularizing Reiki outside of the United States, as well as giving importance to the more commercial aspects of Reiki, like payment for trainings and healings. The first step towards healing a person with Reiki is learning the art itself. This should not be particularly hard, as attaining the first degree of Reiki training (which comes with four energy attunements) can be enough for conferring adequate basic healing. Reiki can only be learnt from a person who has attained the third degree of Reiki training, also sometimes referred to as a Reiki master. The specific mechanics of healing a person with Reiki will depend on among other factors the condition the person is suffering from (called an ‘injury’ in Reiki parlance), as well as the school of thought in Reiki that the practitioner performing the healing belongs to. Generally, the tools employed in healing a person using Reiki are hand placements (for a ‘patient’ who is nearby) and symbols for a person who is far away – as Reiki healing can be done remotely.Where hand placement is employed, you may decide to use whole body treatment or localized treatment. In whole body training, the hand is moved all through the body (aiming for holistic ‘whole person’ healing), whereas in localized treatment, the hand placement is focused on the specific ‘trouble’ area of the body. The hand might be placed directly on the ‘patient’s’ body, or it might be placed some distance away. Direct contact might enhance healing, but it should be noted that ‘patients’ can not only be healed by indirect contact but also even at a distance – where the symbols are employed, though the Reiki practitioner would need at least second degree training to heal a person at a distance.A Reiki healing session starts with a short period of meditation by the practitioner, followed by the hand placement – which is the main mechanism for Reiki healing.Energy attunement is at the core of Reiki healing, and by placing the hand directly on the suffering part of the body or near it, the energy imbalances causing the problem are sorted, leading to a restoration of health. And it is the fact that Reiki healing is all about natural energy attunement which obviates the need to use complex equipment. Where whole body healing is employed, the practitioner might be able to tell the parts of body suffering through meditative intuition, also obviating the need for the unnecessary dialog during the treatment, which is supposed to be carried out in a meditative state. It is also important to note that a single healing might not be enough to effect Reiki healing. Indeed, for most conditions, a series of treatment sessions is considered essential, with routine treatments being encouraged for health maintenance reasons.

Reiki Treatments For Different Ailments

Friday, December 4th, 2009

Reiki treatments are considered as a holistic, natural way for energy healing. The direct meaning or translation of Reiki is traced back to two Japanese words. One is Rein which really means free passage and the other is Kid which means vital life force energy so together, the words mean universal life energy because it is believed that this powerful energy refers to the life force that permeates throughout the universe.
The main goal of a Reiki practitioner is to correctly channelize this positive and powerful energy through the position of the hands so that the body natural capacity for healing is triggered on. This is one of the best things about Reiki treatment because a practitioner is able to share positive energy flow with someone who needs healing on many different levels such as physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. That said, it is important to reiterate that no guarantee is ever provided to assure a person that complete cure would happen but the belief is that cure will definitely happen.
Reiki healing is a natural process that propels an awareness of wholeness, balance and inner peace so as to combat stress. This is why Reiki treatments are mostly referred to as hands on, energy giving treatment with the ability to treat a whole person body, mind and spirit in total harmony.
The Reiki treatment begins as the healer rubs both hands together. Then the hands are placed on the body of the recipient or even just above the body of the recipient so that the healing takes place without any kind of obstruction.
Be aware of the fact that the reiki healing is packed with positive energy so that it can easily heal whatever part of your body, mind, or spirit is most in need of healing. During the sessions for healing, it is natural for both the healer as well as you to experience prickly sensation or cold feeling or maybe no feelings at all. Reiki energy will adjust itself to this kind of varied intensity depending on the needs of the recipient.
Reiki treatment heals in the following way:
* It relaxes at a deep level
* Gets rid of energy blockages
* Helps to detoxify
* Offers new and positive energy that is propelled by universal life energy
* Enhances the vibrational frequency of the body of the recipient
* All kinds of stress related diseases including headache, migraine, sinus, asthma, allergy, arthritis, back pain, diabetes, blood pressure, gastric ulcer, hepatitis, menstrual problems, scleroderma, sinusitis, spondylitis, and many other diseases.
* The negative energy that is usually the result of conventional medicines such as chemotherapy or AIDS related medication can be easily avoided as there are no side effects in Reiki treatment.
Reiki healing is unique because powerful energy transmitted from a competent healer to a recipient irrespective of distance as well because telephonic healing is also possible. Note that this treatment of Reiki is not linked with any religious or spiritual path so it is effective to treat everyone.
Treatment with Reiki is a positive way to promote peace, relaxation and stress reduction. This powerful treatment can be used on other forms of life as well such as plants, animals and in earth healing.
For pregnant women as well, Reiki treatment is suitable because it helps to alleviate morning sickness and back pain without much difficulty. This treatment works really well for physical, mental and emotional aspects so it helps in overall healing.

Reiki: Mindfulness and Compassion

Monday, November 30th, 2009

In this article I want to talk about Mindfulness and Compassion, which I believe are two essential components of Reiki practice. Whether we are treating others, working on ourselves, empowering others or living our lives with Reiki, we should grow to embody those two states, the essence of the Reiki precepts.

Mindfulness

According to Usui Sensei’s surviving students, Mikao Usui introduced his students to the practice of mindfulness at First Degree level, and emphasised this more at Second Degree level. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary (9th Edition), to be mindful is to take heed or care, to be conscious. Mindfulness or being mindful is being aware of your present moment. You are not judging, reflecting or thinking. You are simply observing the moment in which you find yourself, fully aware. Moments are like a breath. Each breath is replaced by the next breath. You are there with no other purpose than being awake and aware of that moment.

So mindfulness is a state of living in the moment, of being relaxed, calm and fully engaged in what we are doing. Mindfulness is being fully aware of what is happening right now and giving ourselves completely to our task without distraction. By learning how to enjoy and be in the present moment we can find peace within ourselves.

Like precepts, mindfulness is largely associated with Buddhism and it is a meditative practice that is not reserved for special meditation sessions: it is a practice that you can embrace as part of your daily life and when carrying out routine and mundane tasks.

The best guide that I have found to the use of mindfulness as part of your daily life is the following book, written by Thich Nhat Hanh: “The Miracle of Mindfulness” and I recommend that all Reiki practitioners and teachers obtain a copy and practise being mindful during their daily activities.

I believe that Mikao Usui’s precepts are all about mindfulness, and that when we are exhorted by the precepts to “just for today” release anger and worry, we are being guided to exist as far as we can in a mindful state. Anger and worry are distractions, you see, and if we can exist in the moment by being mindful then we will not dwell on the past and beat ourselves up for things that did not go the way we wanted, and we will not dwell on the future, perhaps worrying about things that have not yet happened. We can learn to release our attachments to the past and the future and just “be” now, content and accepting in the moment, by learning to be mindful.

Compassion

The final precept, that of being “compassionate towards ourselves and others” is for me an exhortation to be gentle with ourselves, to be patient, to be light-hearted, to not take ourselves quite so seriously and above all to be forgiving – first of all of ourselves but also of others. By accepting and forgiving ourselves we start to release our anger and our worry, and move towards a state of contentment in the moment.

The original system was a spiritual path, a path to enlightenment, and the precepts were what Usui Sensei’s system was all about. These principles are a foundation for everything we do with Reiki: the states of mindfulness and compassion arise from following the precepts and from working with Reiki.

For example, how do we feel when we carry out a Reiki treatment? Treating someone with Reiki is a special, special gift. We feel a closeness, an intimacy, a merging with the recipient; we receive trust and we experience compassion. Ideally we should just be there in the moment, with the energy, with the recipient, with no expectations. We do not treat someone with the intention to resolve their health problem or eliminate their headache. We just merge with the energy and allow Reiki to do its work; we create a sacred space for healing to occur. If our mind wanders, as it may do, then we notice this and gently but firmly bring our attention back to the present and what we are doing. We become one with the energy as it flows through us, we become one with the recipient, and we experience that blissful contentment in the moment. When we treat we are mindful: we are an observer, not a participant.

Though some are taught that you can hold a conversation with someone as you treat, or watch television at the same time, this really will not lead to the best being given to the recipient. To be the most effective channel we can be, we need to be there with the energy, fully and gently engaged in our work, giving ourselves fully to the task without distraction.

Those same principles apply when working on ourselves, whether carrying out Hatsurei ho or self-treating. The state we should seek to achieve is that of being fully engaged in the endeavour, of being with the energy without distraction, merged, aware and simply existing in the moment, with a gentle feeling of forgiveness, love and compassion towards ourselves.

So both Mindfulness and Compassion are fundamental to our life with Reiki, fundamental to the Reiki precepts, to working on others and working on ourselves. Not surprisingly they are also an essential component of the transmission of Reiki to another person through carrying out Reiju empowerments. Reiju is the ‘connection ritual’ that Usui Sensei used, and taught to his surviving students. It is simple, elegant and powerful, free from the clutter and detail that surrounds most Western attunement styles. When we perform Reiju we have no expectations: we are there in the moment with the energy, following the prescribed movements. We are relaxed and fully engaged in what we are doing, aware of what is happening right now, and we give ourselves completely to our task without distraction. That is the essence of Reiju, the essence of treatments, the essence of the precepts, and the essence of our life with Reiki.

Feng Shui Your Reiki!

Sunday, November 29th, 2009

Many of you will be familiar with Feng Shui, the Oriental art of placement, where you arrange your living environment to allow smooth flow of chi through your home, eliminating areas where chi will stagnate, and slowing down the speed of fast-rushing chi. So what has that to do with Reiki? Well they both deal with chi, but what I am really thinking of is applying the basic principles of Feng Shui to our practice of Reiki. This may seem a little strange, but please bear with me…

The basic principle of Feng Shui, the first thing you have to do before you do anything else, is to get rid of your clutter, because a cluttered environment leads to a cluttered life. Only once you have rid yourself of your unnecessary bits and pieces should you move in to apply the other more specific principles of placement. So could we de-clutter our practice of Reiki, what would that be like, and how could we achieve that? Is our Reiki cluttered now? How could we pare it down to the essentials and leave the unnecessary stuff behind?

We do seem to have a tendency in the West to make things endlessly complicated, almost on the basis that if it’s more complicated then it’s better. We like to introduce rules and regulations and restrictions and dogma, maybe because rules make us feel supported and safe, or maybe because we just can’t leave a simple thing alone! Yet the system that Usui Sensei taught to his surviving students wasn’t complicated. It wasn’t cluttered. It was simple and elegant and profound, and I think that we’ve drifted away from that in many ways. We’ve introduced rules and restrictions and dogma into many aspects of Reiki practice: connecting to the energy, treating someone, hand positions, distant healing methods, situations where you ‘should not treat’. This is all clutter and we can do without it. Freeing ourselves from this burden of technique and method and limitation would be a great and beneficial clear-out. We don’t need it. It holds us back. Let’s look at a few examples of unnecessary clutter…

A while ago I was contacted by a poor girl who had been taught that she needed to go through a fifteen-stage ritual in order to ‘connect’ to Reiki. She and the other students on the course were quite worried, obviously concerned that if they didn’t get all the stages right then the energy wouldn’t come through properly and their treatments would be ineffective. Naturally they wanted to do the very best they could for the people they were working on, and they were focusing hard on getting all the necessary stages right.

Yet ‘connection’ with Reiki is simply a state of mind; you connect when you intend to connect. Some people will hold their hands in a particular position (hands above them with palms uppermost to the sky, hands to the sides with palms face up, hands in the prayer position, hands in their lap with palms up, hands folded over the Dantien). Maybe they will say a set form of words, but all these are optional. Bring the energy through your crown to your Dantien and bathe in the light, flood the energy through your body, be still; you are connected when you intend to be. It is a matter of focus, a matter of where your attention lies.

Some people are taught that they must always keep one of their hands in contact with the recipient when they treat, based on the idea that if you take both hands off then you have lost your connection to the recipient and the energy will not flow properly. But your connection to the recipient is a state of mind too: you focus your attention on them, you merge with them and become one with them, and that is sufficient no matter what you are doing with your hands. In fact your treatment starts as soon as you are standing by the table with your attention directed towards the person. Your treatment has already started when you are scanning, or feeling the energy field. Reiki works just as well when you have your hands off the body, though Reiki is basically practised as a hands-on method.

Some Reiki people are taught rigid ‘standard’ hand positions that have to be used every time you treat, and there is the view that if you are not using ‘the’ hand positions then you haven’t been taught properly. Some even have a rigid time limit that has to be followed, so you can only keep your hands in each position for so many minutes… you can buy Reiki CDs which make a little ‘ping’ sound every three minutes (or whatever), and everyone changes hand positions like a robot. Yet what if your hands are going like crazy, what if there energy needs to flood into a particular area for a long time and you need to keep your hands there for 5 minutes or 10 minutes or 15 minutes? The answer would seem to be that you follow the system rigidly and ignore your hands. How sad.

Now standard hand positions are useful when you first learn Reiki: it’s reassuring to have some sort of system to follow. But we can move beyond those standard hand positions in a couple of ways. When we ‘scan’ the body we night discover areas that are drawing lots of Reiki, but they aren’t covered by the ‘standard’ hand positions… we can alter our hand positions accordingly, or add extra positions, to make sure we’re directing the energy into the areas that are drawing the most Reiki. We can use intuition, too, to control our hand positioning, and this has great benefits for the recipient because we are directing the energy into just the right combination of positions for each person we are working on. We might feel inexplicably ‘drawn’ to a particular area, we might just ‘know’ that we ought to be treating a particular area, or we might be practicing “Reiji Ho” from Japan, where our hands are drawn by ‘invisible magnets’ to the right areas to treat. Again we are leaving the rigid standard positions to one side and going with the flow. That was Usui’s way: there were no real standard positions. You simply put your hands where they wanted to go.

Distant healing is another area where lots of rules and regulations have crept in over time. Some people are taught quite complicated rituals that they have to carry out when they perform distant healing, with a set form of words that ‘have’ to be used in a particular way, and with various required visualisations. Yet the bare bones of distant healing are to know where the energy is to go – to set a firm intent – to use the distant healing symbol maybe, and to merge with the recipient, allowing the energy to flow. Anything beyond that is optional. People have different styles: some like to actively visualise and develop a detailed ritual, and that’s fine, but it’s not actually necessary. Others like to keep it simple, and that works just as well. Even the use of the distant healing symbol is optional, though it does help us to focus on merging with the recipient, a way of experiencing ‘oneness’ with the person you’re sending the energy to. Distant healing is perfectly possible at First Degree level, too: it’s simple a matter of intent, of focusing your attention in a particular way. The energy follows your thoughts, it follows your focus.

The final area where we could give our Reiki a big ‘clear out’ is in the rules and restrictions that can control who we should and should not treat. Some people are given a long list of ‘contraindications’: situations where you should not give Reiki because it might be dangerous. Some contraindications that I have come across include: pregnant women, babies, people with pacemakers, diabetics*, people undergoing an anaesthetic, people wearing contact lenses, people with cancer, people suffering from stress, people with broken bones, people taking homoeopathic remedies, people undergoing chemotherapy, people with a torn muscle. There will be many more examples taught in different lineages. These restrictions are nonsense, they have no basis: there is no proper evidence – even anecdotes – to back up the restrictions that are taught in some lineages. Reiki is safe, the person’s body draws it to the right areas to treat, and Reiki is seen as divinely inspired, intelligent, it is seen as pure unconditional love. That view hardly sits too well with the suggestion that you can hurt someone using Reiki. We think too much, we worry too much, and we create problems where there are none.

So a practice of Reiki that follows the first principle of Feng Shui will be a simple practice, free from rules, restrictions and self-imposed limitations. Feng Shui’d Reiki will be free from dogma, and free from rituals that you ‘must’ follow for Reiki to work effectively. It will be a practice that is based on simple intent and intuition, where you merge with the recipient, where you become one with them, and where you let the energy guide you. Let’s get rid of all that clutter and free up our practice, and just let the energy flow.

[ * There is some anecdotal evidence that some diabetics may experience a short term alteration in blood sugar levels following a Reiki treatment. They should be made aware of this possibility and monitor their sugar levels accordingly. However, this does not mean that you should not treat diabetics using Reiki, as is suggested in some quarters. It just means that diabetics should keep an eye on their blood sugar levels following a Reiki treatment or a course of Reiki treatments. They should be checking their blood sugar levels routinely in any case.]
